Un escritor de literatura barata sin trabajo, Holly Martins, llega a una Viena de posguerra dividida en sectores por los aliados victoriosos. Al llegar a una fiesta a la que ha sido invitado por un antiguo amigo de colegio, Harry Lime, que además le ha ofrecido un trabajo, descubre que éste ha muerto en un extraño accidente de tráfico. Hablando con amigos y socios de Lime, Martins se da cuenta de que algunas de las historias sobre la muerte son inconsistentes, y toma la determinación de descubrir lo que realmente ocurrió con su amigo Lime.
